Bodies of Kennedy, Bessettes Brought to Shore
By Lynne Duke Washington Post Staff Writer Thursday, July 22, 1999; Page A1
OTIS AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Falmouth, Mass., July 21 – Navy divers recovered the bodies
of John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife and his sister-in-law from the wreckage of the Kennedy plane in seas southwest of Martha's
Vineyard today, ending a period of uncertainty for their families and putting investigators closer to finding out what caused
the fatal crash.
After scouring the ocean floor for about 18 hours, the recovery team identified the bodies of Kennedy,
38, his wife, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, 33, and her sister Lauren Bessette, 34, about 10:30 a.m. today in 116 feet of water
7.5 miles off the Vineyard's shores, Coast Guard officials said.
Kennedy's body was found in the cockpit, and the women's bodies were found amid the twisted wreckage.
All three were still strapped in their seats, Coast Guard Rear Adm. Richard Larrabee said.
Sources close to the investigation also said today that preliminary radar information shows no evidence
that Kennedy's plane crashed as a result of breaking up in flight.
Investigators have now combed through data from numerous radar installations in the area, and none
shows any additional objects in the vicinity of the Kennedy plane, either as it began its final maneuvers or as it plunged
toward the Atlantic Ocean.
The discovery of the bodies brought some relief to the families, who mostly have remained in seclusion
since the plane was reported missing early Saturday morning. And it prompted an outpouring of renewed mourning among Americans
– at makeshift memorials in Manhattan and Arlington and at the Kennedy museum in Hyannis.
Shortly after the bodies were discovered today, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) and his sons, Edward
M. Kennedy Jr. and Rep. Patrick J. Kennedy (D-R.I.), were flown from the family compound in Hyannis Port aboard a Coast Guard
helicopter and taken to the USS Grasp, at the crash site, for a briefing on the recovery effort. The bodies were brought up
from the ocean floor about 4:30 p.m., Larrabee said, and taken to the medical examiner's office in Woods Hole for autopsies.
The unprecedented interagency effort to recover the bodies and wreckage of a private plane flown by
a private citizen is testament to the deep symbolism and historical importance that many Americans attach to the Kennedy name.
The effort also has raised questions about whether other private citizens would receive similar treatment. President Clinton,
who is close to the Kennedy family, defended the effort at a news conference today and said he had spoken with Navy officials
Monday about whether the search should continue. The officials believed they could succeed with more time, and Clinton recounted
today that he told them "I would support and defend" a decision to continue.
The Kennedy and Bessette families today announced plans for private memorial services. A service for
Kennedy and his wife will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Thomas More church in Manhattan, where Kennedy's mother, Jacqueline
Kennedy Onassis, worshipped. A service for Lauren Bessette will be held Saturday evening in the sisters' home town of Greenwich,
Conn.
There also will be a public memorial service at 6 p.m. Thursday at the old St. Patrick's Cathedral
in lower Manhattan.
The families were trying to resolve differences about burial plans, a source said. A senior administration
official said that Kennedy would be buried at sea as early as Thursday but that plans for his wife and sister-in-law were
uncertain. A Navy ship had been positioned for the sea burial, Pentagon spokesman Kenneth Bacon said.
In Hyannis, the discovery of the bodies seemed to slow most activity in the community the Kennedy family
calls home.
Few magazines bearing the image of John F. Kennedy Jr. on their covers remained for sale at the News
Shop, the quaint corner store where locals sip coffee on an outside bench and discuss the latest news.
Barbara Currier, 43, a long-time summer resident whose son assisted with the initial search, said she
was glad the search has ended with the bodies recovered. "The unknown is almost worse than the known," she said.
Like others in this village, Currier considered the Kennedys part of her extended family and expressed
deep admiration for the way they have handled one tragedy after another. "It touches you because it's right in our back yard,"
she said. "You have to say, 'God bless them, they go on.' There's no guarantee for any of us."
Her daughter, Kendra, 13, said she looked up to the young Kennedy much as her mother had respected
his father. "I wasn't born when JFK died, but now I know what people must have felt," she said.

The intense search for the plane's wreckage and the bodies was conducted meticulously over a 24-mile
swath of at least 10 search grids that had been mapped out according to their potential as wreckage sites.
The stepped-up search this morning was aided by the USS Grasp's sophisticated diving and underwater
endurance equipment, including a remotely operated vehicle, or ROV, to assist the divers. Side-looking sonar from another
vessel also has been used.
Pinpointing the location of the wreckage had taken days in part because Kennedy, before taking off
Friday, did not file a flight plan. In addition, aviation officials had to study radar records from a variety of sources to
map the plane's movement and status at various points.
From that research, investigators determined that Kennedy lost control of the plane and that it plunged
into the ocean in a 53 mph dive from which even experienced pilots could scarely recover.
Kennedy had been a licensed pilot for a little more than a year, making him relatively inexperienced
despite his enthusiasm and his flights virtually every weekend. He took off from the Essex County airport in Fairfield, N.J.,
at 8:38 p.m. Friday on a night of hazy skies and reduced visibility.
Just what happened in the air will be pieced together by investigators as they put together the wreckage
they are collecting in a hangar here at Otis Air National Guard Base. Until the recovery last night of the 8 to 10 feet of
wreckage in which divers found the bodies, the collection of debris recovered so far included part of the plane's landing
gear, a panel of the cabin interior's moulding, a headrest, a piece of luggage and a prescription bottle.
Investigators noted that after the plane began making a series of turns before its fatal plunge, it
appeared to be under control, if perhaps acting erratically. The engine also appeared to be operating, because the plane remained
relatively level until it began the plunge. Some pilots speculated that the plane could not have achieved a descent of more
than 5,000 feet per minute unless it had power on the way down.
Investigators will closely examine the wreckage for the telltale tears, scrapes and other structural
damage that would indicate whether the plane remained intact until it hit water.
Larrabee said the instrument panel is in the wreckage, offering a potential wealth of information on
the plane's final moments and what Kennedy did with the controls in the moments before the crash.
Staff writer Don Phillips in Washington and special correspondent Pamela Ferdinand in Hyannis contributed
to this report.

John F. Kennedy Jr. Is Married, Quietly, Reports Say
By ROBERT D. MCFADDEN
After years of speculation about his romantic life and a weekend flurry of hot rumors,
John F. Kennedy Jr. was reported yesterday to have been married on Saturday to Carolyn Bessette, his girlfriend, in a private
ceremony at a small resort on a secluded Georgia barrier island.
Judge Martin O. Gillette of Camden County Probate Court, whose office is in Woodbine,
Ga., confirmed late last night that his office had issued the couple
a marriage license on Thursday, though the license had not been returned to confirm that a ceremony
occurred.
Usually, couples fill out the license questionnaire together at the courthouse, the
judge said, but Ms. Bessette and Mr. Kennedy asked to be questioned separately aboard different planes at St. Mary's Airport
near Cumberland Island. Ms. Bessette was questioned at 6:15 P.M. and Mr. Kennedy at 7:30 P.M. by two of the judge's clerks,
he said.
''They wanted privacy,'' Judge Gillette said.
There was no wedding announcement, and members of the Kennedy family who may have attended
the ceremony -- including Senator Edward M. Kennedy and the groom's sister, Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg -- said nothing as
they hurried to planes yesterday at an airport a few miles from Cumberland Island, where the wedding and a reception apparently
took place.
But Ms. Schlossberg responded with a thumbs-up sign when a television crew shouted questions
about reports of the wedding. And the groom's cousin, Representative Patrick Kennedy, a Rhode Island Democrat, provided what
seemed to be more certain confirmation yesterday at a political appearance in Steubenville, Ohio.
''My cousin John did tie the knot yesterday,'' Patrick Kennedy said, according to The
Associated Press. He made the comments at a fund-raiser for a fellow Democrat, State Senator Robert Burch, who is running
for a seat in the House of Representatives. Mr. Kennedy gave no details of the wedding, to which he was not invited, but his
spokesman, Larry Berman, confirmed that Ms. Bessette was the bride. ''I think it was, from what we heard, very small,'' he
told The A.P.
The 35-year-old son of President John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis had
been the object of gossip and speculation for years in tabloids that have dubbed him ''The Sexiest Man Alive'' and ''America's
Most Eligible Bachelor.'' He had been romantically linked for five years to Ms. Bessette, 28, who most recently worked in
public relations for Calvin Klein Ltd. in New York City.
Mr. Kennedy, the co-founder and editor of George, a magazine of political commentary,
ended a lengthy relationship with the actress Darryl Hannah not long after his mother's death in 1994. Last September, Mr.
Kennedy denied reports that he and Ms. Bessette were engaged, but over the past year they were seen together in New York and
at the Kennedy compound at Hyannis, on Cape Cod. The couple were videotaped last February in a New York park having what was
taken to be a lover's quarrel. It was shown on television and turned up in newspapers and magazines.
New York magazine reported last week that Mr. Kennedy, apparently seeking privacy, had
made wedding plans without divulging the date or place even to many of his closest relatives and friends.
Fewer than a dozen people were reported to have attended the ceremony at 4 P.M. Saturday
in a chapel on Cumberland Island, an unspoiled barrier beach in the southeast corner of Georgia that was once a vacation home
for the Carnegie family. The wedding party stayed on the island at Greyfield Inn, a bed-and-breakfast resort, where a reception
was held.
The Cumberland Island National Seashore on the island is operated by the National Park
Service, which has a small staff there. The Florida Times-Union in Jacksonville reported, however, that security was unusually
high on the island over the weekend, with private guards turning the curious away from Greyfield Inn. The newspaper also quoted
a park volunteer as saying that members of the Kennedy family were on the island and had been arriving under the cover of
darkness for several days at Fernandina Airport in Fernandina Beach, eight miles south of the island, just across the Florida
state line.
Friends of the Kennedy family said that the groom's uncle, Senator Edward Kennedy, flew
down on Friday evening. Danny Newton, of Island Aviation Services at the airport, said yesterday that the Senator, with a
party of eight people, and Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg, with one or two companions, had left the airport in separate private
planes yesterday shortly before 1 P.M.

Bergdorf Blondes was the début novel of Plum Sykes, an English-born fashion writer and New York “it girl”.
It was first published in
the USA by Hyperion, and in Britain by Viking, in 2004. Penguin published a paperback edition in 2005.
Bergdorf Blondes was a quirky and highly successful example
of “chick lit”, selling more than a quarter of a million copies worldwide. It was set among the
smart Park Avenue “in-crowd” of Upper Manhattan, New York, with which Plum Sykes herself was associated as a contributing editor of American Vogue.
Among the 44 personal acknowledgements in Sykes’ preface, the first was of Anna Wintour, the editor of Vogue who recruited Sykes from its British counterpart in the mid
1990s, and the last, the entrepreneur Toby Rowland, whom Sykes married in 2005.
The book and its context
Bergdorf Blondes
is a satirical miscellany of high fashion and style a few
years into the 21st century – three years after the terrorist attacks on New York of 11 September 2001, an event which is mentioned once, but impinges not at all.
Its style of narration is similar to that of Carrie Bradshaw in Candace Bushnell’s Sex and the City (HBO 1998-2004), to which some reviewers saw Bergdorf Blondes as a successor.
As a story about an English woman moving in fashionable circles in New York, the narrator
(“moi”), whose “personal bible”
is Anita Loos’ novel, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1925), appears to owe something to Sykes herself.
The other main character is her best friend, Julie Bergdorf (“the biggest princess of them all”), who is heir to the real-life Bergdorf Goodman store, on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.
This was founded in 1899 by Herman Bergdorf, an Alsatian immigrant from whom Edwin Goodman purchased it in 1906. The journalist Ariel Leve wrote that Bergdorf Goodman "is like a five-star hotel ...
You feel like you're spending money by simply breathing" [1].
Sykes has said that Julie Bergdorf was “slightly inspired”
by the retail heiress Elizabeth Woolworth [2].
Julie is rumoured to have her hair coloured at Bergdorf every thirteen
days; hence, the eponymous term, “Bergdorf blondes” (or "BBs"), for those who are
able to emulate its precise colour, which is likened to that of the late Carolyn Bessette Kennedy (1966-99).
When Julie feels unable to bide her time for a particular fashion accessory, such as a Hermès Birkin bag, for which there is a three-year wait, she shoplifts from the family store –
“kind of stealing from yourself”.
Its language
Rather like the “Slayer slang” of the TV series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer (WB/UPN 1998-2003),
Bergdorf Blondes employs a rich vocabulary of
“in” words and abbreviations – “Arizona” for “rehab”; “FOB/G” (Friend of President Bill Clinton/George W Bush); “Ana” (anorexic).
On first arriving in New York, the narrator discovers
that "Brazilians" are not only men from Latin America, but total bikini waxes.
To assist the reader, there is a glossary of “Manhattan shorthand”. Sykes'
second novel, The Debutante Divorcée, followed in 2006.

H
CAROLYN BESSETTE KENNEDY
Birth: |
Jan. 7, 1966 |
Death: |
Jul. 16, 1999 MarthaÕs Vineyard Massachusetts, USA |
Socialite and wife of John F. Kennedy, Jr. She gained a certain notoriety herself due to public interest and attention
to her husband. Born in White Plains, New York, she was the youngest daughter of Dr. William
J. and Ann Messina Bessette. Her father was a surgeon and her mother an administrator in
the New York public school system. She grew up in affluent Greenwich, Connecticut, attending St.
Mary's High School, where in her senior year, she was voted "All Around Beautiful Person." In 1988, after graduating from
Boston University, she went to work at a Calvin Klein store in Boston. With her good looks, she soon became a model in New
York City, and then became a publicist for Calvin Klein Company, where she is supposed to have met Kennedy while he was shopping
for suits. As they dated, they became instant targets of the paparazzi, which she reportedly hated. Although pursued by the
paparazzi, and the constant target of tabloid press, she non-the-less decided to marry JFK Jr, which she did on September
21, 1996, on secluded Cumberland Island, Georgia, in an attempt to elude the anticipated media frenzy. After a honeymoon in
Turkey, the couple returned to the US, where the media immediately crowned her "Camelot's New Queen."
While most of her press reviews complemented Carolyn on her grace and pose, she reportedly hated the comparison with her mother-in-law,
Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Carolyn accompanied her older sister, Lauren, and her husband, John F. Kennedy, Jr. on his private
plane while they went to a Kennedy family wedding of his cousin, Rory Kennedy, at Hyannisport, Massachusetts; Lauren was to
be dropped off first at Martha's Vineyard while Carolyn and her husband proceeded on to Hyannisport. The aircraft, a six seat,
single engine Piper Saratoga II HP, departed Essex County Airport in Fairfield, New Jersey for
Martha's Vineyard in the late afternoon, with John F. Kennedy, Jr at the controls, and crashed shortly after dark just off
of Martha's Vineyard. When the plane failed to arrive as scheduled, a search was begun, but by the next day, President Bill
Clinton authorized the US Navy to enter the search on the grounds that the missing JFK Jr was a national figure (as private
citizens, they were normally not authorized to have the US Government search for them). The plane was found approximately
seven miles offshore, in approximately 100 feet of water, with all three occupants believed to have been killed instantly
when it hit the water. Having left no will, Carolyn's mother, Ann Messina
Freeman (she had divorced her husband several years earlier, and remarried to Dr. Richard Freeman,
an orthopedic surgeon) received permission from the Manhattan court to become the administrator of her daughter's estate;
she later successfully sued the Kennedy estate for wrongful death with an undisclosed out-of-court settlement. Carolyn's ashes
were scattered at sea off the coast of Martha's Vineyard, along with those of JFK Jr and her sister Lauren, in a funeral service
on the Navy's USS Briscoe, one of the ships sent to search for the missing trio. (bio by:
